12:00pm | A 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Mexicali in Mexico on Sunday afternoon was felt as mild rolling in Long Beach. No injuries or damage have been reported in Long Beach, and no threat of tsunami was issued.
In Mexicali, power went down and communication was difficult, so the full damage extent may not yet be known. Some houses crumbled and roads were damaged, and at least two people died. The Associated Press reports that about 100 have been injured. The California city of Calexico sustained significant damage, but no injuries have been reported.
Experts say that the earthquake had a shallow depth – about six miles under the surface – that limited damage. Personally, I felt the quake as a mild rolling in Santa Clarita and it was even felt as far away as Phoenix.
