12:15pm | The California Department of Transportation has announced that a section of the I-710 Freeway between the I-105 Freeway and the Atlantic Boulevard exit will be completely shut down for several hours at a time two times per weekend on 10 consecutive weekends spanning August through mid-October.
The full closures are necessary to complete the Long Life Pavement Rehabilitation Project, according to CalTrans.
The extended weekend closures will occur on the following weekends:
- August 5 – 8, 12 – 15, 19 – 22 and 26 – 29
- September 9 – 12, 16 – 19, 23 – 26, and 30 – Oct. 3
- October 7 – 10, 14 – 17
There will be no construction on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2 – 5, in observance of the holiday.
The full freeway closures in both directions will begin each weekend at 11:59 p.m. Fridays and run through 6 a.m. on Saturdays. They will begin again Sundays at 11 p.m. and run through 5 a.m. on Mondays.
During the initial closure each weekend, moveable median barriers will be installed. They will guide motorists to shift to the northbound side of the freeway to commute in a reduced number of lanes while construction crews work on the southbound 710 over the weekend. During the final closure, the moveable median barriers will be removed in time for the Monday morning commute.
The following ramps and connectors will be closed throughout each weekend:
- Eastbound and westbound on-ramps to the northbound I-710 from Imperial Highway, Firestone Boulevard and Florence Avenue;
- Eastbound & westbound on-ramps to the southbound I-710 from Atlantic, Florence and Firestone;
- Eastbound & westbound off-ramps from the southbound I-710 at Florence and Firestone;
- Eastbound & westbound I-105 connector to the northbound I-710.
