10:45am | Mark Bixby was an important part of the Long Beach Post family. For two years (2007-2009) he served as our first photographer and wrote a routine column called, “The Angle.” Mark presented photo essays that, according to him, added color and perspective to our life in Long Beach.

A self-described “hobbyist photographer,” Bixby took readers on a creative journey from the Los Angeles to the San Gabriel River, from North Long Beach to our waterfront capturing the people and places from unique photographic perspectives.

Last Wednesday, five men, including Mark, tragically died in a plane crash at the Long Beach Airport. A sixth passenger, Mike Jensen, survived and remains in critical condition.

When Mark joined our team, we asked him for a short biography so our readers could get a feel for the man behind the camera. Here is what he came up with:

When not building buildings, coaching his three children or photographing sports and events, Mark can be found bicycling, surfing or scratching on a guitar. He is lucky that spouse Theresa puts up with too many hobbies.

In an open letter to Mark Bixby last week, Kraig Kojian and the Downtown Long Beach Associates said it best: wise man once said that ‘To live in the hearts of those we leave behind is not to die.’ There isn’t a more fitting sentiment as we reflect on the life that you led and the lasting impact you will have on those of us who had the honor of calling you a friend.

Below is a reflection of some of Mark’s most memorable images from his time with us at the Long Beach Post.

According to Mark, Camp Enterprise was a passion. “It is an extraordinary experience for young leaders of tomorrow who participate in a program that will help them develop future leadership skills,” he told Long Beach Post readers in 2007.
