The Long Beach Fire Department is mourning the loss of a 20-year veteran firefighter, Chris Parker, who died unexpectedly at home from natural causes on Feb. 8.

A viewing is scheduled for tomorrow from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the McAulay and Wallace Mortuary in Fullerton. On Wednesday, a memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. at EvFree Fullerton Church. Both are open to the public, according to LBFD.

Parker started with LBFD in 1998 and worked as a firefighter at different stations all over the city, most recently at Fire Station 13 in West Long Beach. At one point, he worked as a fire investigator in the Arson Unit, LBFD spokesman Jake Heflin said.

He was considered a “senior firefighter” and mentored others, particularly during his time at Fire Station 1.

“Chris was a fixture at the station and was known for his colorful stories, and his larger than life personality,” Heflin said. “He was witty, animated and loved his job. He was a servant and was well respected by his peers. His presence was felt by all those that had the fortune of working with him.”

Parker also received numerous commendations during his career, according to Heflin.

“Firefighter Chris Parker was a hero in the truest sense of the word,” Fire Chief Xavier Espino said. “For 20 years, Chris selflessly served and protected the city of Long Beach, its citizens, and those who visited. While on duty, he was a mentor in the station house and an ambassador for the fire service. Though taken from us far too early, his contributions to our community and department will forever be remembered. Rest in peace, my friend.”

Parker is survived by his wife, Corrine, his brother Jeff, sister Jennifer, step-mother Carolyn and his three dogs, TT, Franklyn and Jolie.

McAulay and Wallace Mortuary is located at 902 North Harbor Boulevard in Fullerton. EvFree Fullerton Church is located at 2801 N. Brea Blvd. in Fullerton.
