Local psychotherapist and community activist Brad Shore announced his candidacy for next April’s race for the Ninth District City Council seat this weekend, joining fellow candidates Dan Pressburg, Steven Neal and current incumbent Vice Mayor Val Lerch (who will conduct a write-in campaign after serving two full terms) in the race.

Shore, 52, works as a psychotherapist at Long Beach’s St. Mary’s Hospital and is involved with several local organizations. According to his website’s biography, Shore has lived in Long Beach since 2000 and is running with the desire to improve overall quality of life in the 9th District.

Shore has also been employed with American Airlines for 25 years and an APFA union-member, where he founded the company’s Employee Diversity Program.  Locally, he’s involved with the North Long Beach Community Action Group and the North Long Beach Project Area Committee, among others.

The competition he’ll face is stiff.  Lerch will term out next April after serving two terms in the Ninth District seat and the past twelve months as Vice Mayor. With Lerch unable to post his name on the ballot due to term limits, he’ll rely on a write-in campaign.  His longtime aide, Dan Pressburg, is also well known within the community, and non-profit executive director Steven Neal came close to winning the 2006 race for the seat.
