Hot off the heels of successful benefits like the Children Today 5k and the Long Beach Marathon last weekend, local chapters of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLA) are preparing to hold a 5k walk in November to raise money for their efforts to bring awareness to the issue of hearing loss. More than 36 million people in America suffer from hearing difficulties, including 1/3 of people over the age of 65.
The event will be the latest romp through Long Beach streets to bring attention to a good cause. On Sunday, November 8, walkers will begin at Marina Green Park between Shoreline Village Drive and Linden Avenue. New participants are welcome to visit the event website at walk4hearing.org and anyone can register and join a team. The location was selected because of local scenery and high membership in nearby HLA chapters.
In the interest of full disclosure, my mother is a proud member of the San Fernando chapter and is assisting with the event here in Long Beach. I watched her battle and eventually overcome her trouble with hearing, and through the HLA she’s found a positive group of people who understand her frustration. She and many more like her are now channeling their energies toward finding others with the same struggles. The HLA works to make members feel that they should not be ashamed, and helps them deal with any difficulties.
Please consider visiting the website (walk4hearing.org) and promoting the HLA’s effort to bring awareness to hearing loss.
