Update  |  La Casa Mental Health Rehabilitation Center representatives made an announcement Wednesday stating the center was in compliance with all applicable licensing laws and regulations at the time of the suicide of an actor’s son last November.

The statement was issued a day after actor Kristoff St. John—best known for his role on the television show The Young and the Restless—and his ex-wife filed a negligence and wrongful death lawsuit against the Long Beach facility’s parent company, Telecare Corp.

“The staff and management of La Casa Mental Health Rehabilitation Center want to express their deepest sympathies to the family of Julian St. John following his tragic suicide in November 2014,” the statement read.

Julian, 24, was found face down on the floor with a bag over his head in a bathroom at La Casa Mental Health Rehabilitation Center on November 23, less than three weeks after he attempted to kill himself in the same way, according to the lawsuit.

According to La Casa, the California Department of Health Care Services found the center in compliance with laws and regulations on May 5, after reviewing the case. The Los Angeles Department of Mental Health also concluded Julian’s treatment and care at the facility was “reasonable and in line with clinical procedures, given his mental condition.”

05/26/15 02:29PM | Actor Kristoff St. John—best known for his role on the television show The Young and the Restless—and his ex-wife filed a negligence and wrongful death lawsuit Tuesday against the parent company of a Long Beach facility where their son died six months ago.

Julian St. John, 24, was found face down on the floor with a bag over his head in a bathroom at La Casa Mental Health Rehabilitation Center on November 23, less than three weeks after he attempted to kill himself in the same way, according to the lawsuit filed against Alameda-based Telecare Corp.

The lawsuit claims employees regularly skipped mandatory check-ins and observations and falsified reports to cover up their alleged neglect. The suit also claims employees made no attempts to prevent Julian from obtaining plastic bags, even after he tried to kill himself with one.

Julian committed suicide three days after the end of a two-week, one-on-one observation, which began after his most recent suicide attempt.

“Had defendants acted with the slightest regard for Julian’s safety, he would still be alive today,” the suit alleges.

The 48-year-old actor and his 47-year-old former spouse, boxer Mia St. John, are seeking unspecified damages.

A Telecare representative did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the suit, which was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court.

According to the lawsuit, Julian battled mental illness his entire life and displayed signs of autism at a young age. He tried to kill himself by running into oncoming traffic last September, the suit states.
