As multiple fires burn across the San Diego area, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) has issued a smoke advisory today for the entire coastline of Los Angeles County.
The smoke of the fires is drifting north due to winds from the south, prompting officials to fear that heightened levels of particulate emissions and smoke odors will reach the coast. This is already on top of record-breaking temperatures in Long Beach and the recent brush fire at PCH and 2nd.
“Everyone should avoid any vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion,” the SCAQMD said in a statement. “People with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should remain indoors. Keep windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter. Run your air conditioner if you have one. Do not use a swamp cooler or whole-house fan to prevent bringing additional smoke inside. To avoid worsening the health effects of wildfire smoke, don’t use indoor or outdoor wood-burning appliances, including fireplaces.”
