almoroThe Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners announced Friday that it has named Chief Harbor Engineer Al Moro as the Port of Long Beach’s interim executive director.

Moro joined the Port in 1997 and has more than 40 years experience as a professional engineer. In his current position, he oversees all administrative and technical aspects of the Port’s four engineering programs including supervising 135 employees from surveyors and technicians to support staff. He also manages the Port’s extensive capital improvement program, including the replacement of the Gerald Desmond Bridge.

Moro’s appointment will not be official until a formal vote on June 17, however, the announcement does mean a step forward in dealing with the departure of current Executive Director Chris Lytle, who announced last month that he will be leaving Long Beach to head the Port of Oakland.

“With Al leading the organization, we can now turn our attention to conducting a search for a permanent Port director,” said Board President Susan Wise.

Wise said that Moro will not be considered a candidate for the permanent position, but that his experience watching the Port grow in the last 16 years makes him ideally suited to lead the Port in the months ahead.

“I am honored to have been selected by the Board of Harbor Commissioners to serve as interim director,” Moro commented. “A major goal of mine will be to provide stability and continuity during the transition. It’s important that we continue to move forward with all of our projects.”

Lytle will be leaving the Port of Long Beach in mid-July after two years as executive director.
