World-reknowned muralist Wyland began his 2.8-acre piece atop the roof of the Long Beach Arena this afternoon, as he hopes to complete his mural of the planet Earth (as seen from space) within 24 hours. Wyland is best known for his mural lining the outside walls of the circular arena, “Planet Ocean.”
Wyalnd is not being paid for his work, and says he hopes his piece inspires others to care for the environment in honor of Earth Day. He has dedicated the piece to President and First Lady Obama for their environmental policies.
The rooftop mural will be completed and unveiled this afternoon.
From the ground, Wyland shows a graphic of his future work while his past work sets the background.
Wyland, who is not all too fond of heights, arrives at the top in a cherry picker.
Wyland displays his (literal and figurative) green thumb, with the shade of green he’s chosen for the earth portion of his mural.
