Democrats may be excited this week as their candidate is nominated, but local Republicans are taking this time to get voters excited about the election by discussing local taxes supported by Democratics.
This week and last, Republicans have gathered in local restaurants in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th City Council districts to discuss the parcel tax measure supported by Mayor Foster. Although the official Republican Party has yet to take a position, the sentiment and discussion of the measure was largely opposed to any tax increases.
Patrons dining Tuesday at Naples Rib Joint had to have known something was going on in the back room as a large McCain poster was affixed to the wall and a group of approximately 25 Republicans gabbed enthusiastically about November prospects, especially since polls show little bounce from the Obama VP pick, Joe Biden.
Long Beach City Prosecutor Tom Reaves, the Long Beach McCain for President Chair, spoke from the heart about why he has been a McCain supporter since 2000, and about the efforts going on in Long Beach. His talk was followed by a video that depicts John McCain’s military experience as a POW in Vietnam, including some of the life and death challenges he faced throughout his five years as a prisoner.
The video was followed by a talk by Manhattan Beach resident and Los Angeles Criminal Prosecutor Ken Hughey, himself a former Vietnam POW at the same time as John McCain. He spoke eloquently about why he believes that the character and leadership demonstrated by John McCain during that time and since make him extremely well suited to be our next Commander-in Chief.
