The gunman who police say shot three men and carjacked two women during a 15-minute crime spree in North Long Beach last week before barricading and killing himself inside a Carson church was identified Monday, authorities said.

Thomas Seve, 29, was identified by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office as the gunman in the chaotic series of events that began near DeForest Park around 7:16 p.m. Thursday, March 10.

Police say Seve was responsible for shooting three men in the upper body and carjacking two women in North Long Beach, before leading police to a Carson church on the 21600 block of Alameda Street. The three men who were shot are expected to survive.

Once inside the church, Seve held a woman whose car he stole hostage while officers and SWAT established a perimeter around the area, police said. Eventually, the hostage, and additional people inside the church who knew Seve, exited the church unharmed, police said.

The hours-long standoff ended when gunshots rang out from inside the church. Upon hearing the shots, SWAT personnel moved into the church where they found Seve with self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body, authorities said. No officers fired shots, the LBPD said.

Seve was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries, authorities said.

The motive behind each incident remains unclear, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

Neighbors who watched as SWAT swarmed their streets said that Seve did not barricade himself in the main Arise Family Fellowship Church, located on 21608 Alameda St, but instead in a weathered-down, gray industrial-looking building a couple of structures down that is used by Arise Church for different functions.

The day after the shooting, the church closed the doors to both buildings and did not hold its weekly 6 a.m. prayer meeting. All that was left of the chaos the night before was a few pieces of littered police tape in the alleyway behind the church.

Arise Church Pastor Frank Seve was not immediately available for comment following the incident. It was not clear whether he was related to the gunman.
