A motorcyclist killed in a crash near Cal State Long Beach Thursday afternoon was identified by authorities today as 49-year-old Long Beach resident Shane Lee Gibson.

Police say a 60-year-old driver of a 2015 Honda Civic was traveling northbound on Bellflower Boulevard from Seventh Street at around 3:30 p.m. when she suddenly swerved into the opposite lanes of traffic and collided with Gibson.

Long Beach police officers, along with personnel from the nearby Department of Veteran Affairs Police Department, responded to the area and located Gibson lying in the roadway of Bellflower Boulevard, south of Anaheim Road.

Despite officers’ efforts to save his life, Gibson died at the scene.

The driver of the Honda Civic was transported to a local hospital for treatment after also suffering minor injuries in the crash, according to the LBPD. She was only identified as a Cypress resident.

It’s not clear at this time what caused the driver of the Honda Civic to swerve into the southbound lanes of Bellflower Boulevard, though police say speed, distracted driving and driving under the influence do not appear to be factors in the crash.
