Bicyclist in critical condition after Belmont Shore collision

A bicyclist is in critical condition after being hit by a car Second Street and Bay Shore Avenue in southeast Long Beach early Thursday morning.

The intersection was shut down for about an hour after the crash at 5:25 this morning as authorities investigated. The roadway has since reopened.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that the bicyclist was traveling northbound on Bay Shore Avenue and entered the intersection on a red light when the vehicle travelling westbound on Second Street with a green light entered the intersection, resulting in the collision,” police spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez said.

The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital with injuries to her upper torso, police said. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, De Prez said.
