A Belmont Heights home was moderately damaged Wednesday afternoon when a heavy fire broke out, firefighters said.

The Long Beach Fire Department responded to the 500 block of Grand Avenue after reports of a fire inside a home near Fremont Elementary School, officials said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 2:06 p.m. and discovered “heavy smoke and heavy fire” coming from the left side of the home and the attic, Long Beach Fire Department spokesperson Jake Heflin said. LBFD extinguished the blaze in roughly 14 minutes, Heflin said.

Neighbors from up and down the street came over to watch firefighters do an extensive overhaul on the home to make sure the fire was fully extinguished. The owner’s belongings hugged the curb as firefighters placed what was salvageable outside. The owners of the home were not immediately available at the scene to discuss the incident.

Amanda Weimer, who was babysitting in the house next door, said she was in the kitchen when she felt the heat. When she lifted up the blinds, the heat grew stronger and she could see the “huge flames” outside. That’s when she grabbed the baby and went outside.

No injuries were reported, Heflin said. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but firefighters were still at the scene investigating, he said.
