A hit-and-run accident near Second Street in Belmont Shore last Thursday damaged a fire hydrant, shooting water 50 feet into the air and flooding the area’s narrow streets with around 75,000 gallons of water.

In the early afternoon on October 4, Long Beach Water Department officials say they received a call from the Long Beach Fire Department dispatch stating that a truck backed into a fire hydrant near the address of 190 Quincy Ave. damaging the hyrdant and causing the water to spew into the air.

“One of our crew trucks was sent to the location to shut down the damaged hydrant,” said Matthew Veeh, Director Government & Public Affairs for the Long Beach Water Department, when contacted by the Post on Friday. “Our employees will replace the damaged hydrant with a new one on Monday.”

The Department estimates that approximately 75,000 gallons of water was lost as a result of the run-over hydrant. But because the driver of the truck fled the scene before anyone arrived, Veeh says that, unfortunately, the Department is unable to hold anyone responsible for causing the damage and the water loss.
