1:15pm | The driver of a van that crashed into and killed a bicyclist early Friday morning remains free and has not been charged with a crime, police said.
The 57-year-old driver of a 2009 Ford van was heading east on Carson Street just after 3 a.m. Friday morning when he collided just west of Los Coyotes Diagonal with a bicyclist also heading east on Carson, according to information provided by Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Massacani.
The motorist, whose name has not been released, immediately stopped and called 911 while attempting to help the injured man, Massacani said. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, she said.
The bicyclist has been identified as Leonardo Antonio Florez, a 56-year-old Lakewood resident, she said.
The driver, who lives in Huntington Park, was questioned by Long Beach police at the scene and released, Massacani said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
