Last Friday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Port of Long Beach released a draft Environmental Impact Report on proposed construction of a new terminal on privately owned land located within the Harbor District.

The proposed project was submitted by Eagle Rock Aggregates, Incorporated and involves the construction and operation of a receiving, storage and distribution terminal for sand, granite and other aggregates which would be received from self-unloading vessels and loaded into trucks for distribution to area customers.

According to the report, construction of the terminal may cause a severe environmental impact because it will require 35 vessels to bring in 2.75 million tons of aggregate annually as well as over 700 one-way truck trips per day, which can lead to over 100,000 truck trips per year.

The Port of Long Beach will be holding a public hearing at 6PM on Thursday, August 22, for residents of Long Beach to comment and address any concerns regarding the proposed construction. It will be held at the Long Beach City Council Chambers at 333 West Ocean Boulevard.

Long Beach residents are also allowed to make their comments in writing to Port of Long Beach Director of Environmental Planning Rick Cameron at 925 Harbor Plaza in Long Beach or at [email protected]. The deadline for any comments is September 21.
