The Ralph’s supermarket on Long Beach Boulevard and San Antonio Dr. is closing for good Saturday, June 15. The cornerstone grocer has been serving uptown Long Beach–primarily Bixby Knolls, Citrus Heights, and surrounding neighborhoods–since 2001.
The announcement is just the latest in a rash of supermarket closures across Long Beach that includes the Albertson’s on Redondo Ave. and 6th St., which was followed by a short-lived stint from Top Valu, which closed a few months ago.
Ralphs is owned by the Kroger Company, out of Cincinnati, Ohio, representatives from which say that corporate will be maintaining the grounds until the next investor or company moves in. It was originally rumored that the Ralph’s might be replaced by another Kroger brand, Food 4 Less, but the company now says it intends to sell the property.
The promise to maintain the structure was made at a recent community meeting after residents expressed concern about potential site blight in the absence of active retail.
Although Ralph’s is closing next Saturday, shoppers can take advantage of a 25% liquidation sale. Employees will be transferred to other local Ralph’s.
