Signal Hill’s first 99 Cents Only Store location might have officially opened its doors at 8AM this morning, but potential customers have been camping out and waiting in line since Tuesday night, hoping to score some of the company’s signature first-day deals including a 99 cent flat-screen television.
A photo tweeted by the retail chain Wednesday morning showed more than a dozen people in line out front of the new location on Willow St. and Gardenia Ave. That number grew overnight with company representatives saying they expected 300-400 attendees, similar to previous grand openings. The first nine in line will be allowed to purchase a 24-inch Westinghouse flat-screen LCD TV for 99 cents and the following 99 customers can buy a scooter for 99 cents.
Advertisements sent to the media list nine days of grand opening specials which begin today with a 99-cent iPod speaker system and a “Color Explosion” children’s art set from Crayola. Through next Friday January 18, items such as offical NBA Kobe Bryant backpacks and specialized Wii controllers are also just 99 cents.
“In these difficult economic times, we are very proud to be bringing employment opportunities, increased revenue and exceptional values to the city and people of Long Beach,” said Erin Estelle, Marketing Manager for the Commcerce-based company.
99 Cents Only Stores started in 1982 and now operates more than 300 “extreme value” retail stores in four states. The new store is approximately 23,700 square feet and will feature a perishable food department, including produce, dairy and frozen foods.
