Frugal Long Beach shoppers will have cuter options come the end of March, when Daiso Japan opens its new location near the Traffic Circle.

The store, which will now have 45 locations in the United States, including the Long Beach location, and has more than 2,700 stores in Japan, could be described as the Japanese Dollar Tree, but with much more charming items.

For $1.50 each, the store sells things like home goods, office supplies, hair accessories and more, all with a distinctly kawaii (“cute” in Japanese; think Hello Kitty) style.

Prior to the Long Beach store opening, the closest Daiso Japan stores were located in Lakewood, Torrance and Buena Park.

Yoshi Murata, Senior Vice President of Daiso USA, told the Long Beach Post that he is excited for the store to open, which he estimates will open at the end of March next to the Ralphs at 1930 North Lakewood Boulevard.

“We were looking for the space for Daiso in the Long Beach area for years, but unfortunately we couldn’t find the right place,” he said. “We just found the right place. Long Beach is great because of the Asian communities and Long Beach State. There are many students coming to Long Beach. It’s really exciting. I don’t know how many people know about Daiso in Long Beach but we’d like to have a presence there.”

Murata said Daiso is planning to have promotions for the first few hundred people at the Long Beach location when it has its grand opening, but those details were not yet planned.
