Long Beach and Los Angeles Harbor Commissioners postponed a joint-commission vote on an update to the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan on Wednesday to “allow the public more time to review the proposal,” according to a statement issued by the Port of Long Beach.

The 2010 CAAP Update is expected to considered again in November. The delay does not affect air-pollution reduction measures in place, according to the statement.
The ports will reportedly use the extra time to clarify the document for industry and other stakeholders, including a discussion by staff and representatives in the rail industry on proposed measures on long haul locomotives and whether to seek an alternative.
Since its adoption in 2006, the original CAAP has initiated a range of air pollution-reducing measures for ships, trains, trucks, and other heavy machinery at the twin ports.
The 2010 CAAP Update is part of the original pledge to ensure that the CAAP is a “living document” that will be adapted as needed to add new pollution-control measures. The Update sets even more aggressive goals for reducing air pollution and health risks from port operations.
The proposed 2010 CAAP update fact sheet and a “Response to Comments” document are available at cleanairactionplan.org.
