After 51 years of business at Pacific Coast Highway and 2nd Street, the oldest of six operating Hof’s Hut shuttered its doors for good Thursday.

As previously reported when customers staged a protest to the closure in January, company spokesperson Erin Peacock complicatedly cited a rocky lease agreement as the main reason that prevents the local-staple location from remaining open. Her explanation amidst protestors on January 15 was felt by many to be insufficient.

“It’s economics,” she said at the time. “It’s the difference between more of a family dining and more of a casual dining experience. It all comes down to revenues in and costs out.”

Owner Craig Hofman reiterated the problem of a subpar lease to the Los Angeles Times as well as expressing a deep sympathy regarding the customers he will be leaving behind as he continues to operate not only the other Hof’s, but the chains his company is responsible for, including Lucille’s BBQ and an upcoming Neapolitan-style pizza chain of restaurants, which Hof’s owns the California rights to.

Many of the employees from the Marina Hof’s Hut will be moved to other Hof’s, including server favorite Lupita Becerra, who has been at this particular location for 22 years and will be moved to the Hof’s in Los Altos.

Watch below NBC4’s Hetty Chang and her interviews with locals and employees regarding the closure.
