9:15am | Reacting to a severe budget shortfall and the uncertainty of future state funding, the Long Beach Board of Education on Monday voted to fire 357 teachers, according to Press-Telegram reporter Kevin Butler. The district will also institute furlough days next year, which they believe will save 200 jobs.

After the Teachers Association of Long Beach challenged the legality of the district’s policy for firing teachers, a judge last week ruled that the district was within its rights. This allowed to Board to continue with its layoffs.

The Board actually approved the firing of 557 teachers and other employees, but will void 200 of those pink slips. About 120 of the jobs saved will be elementary teachers.
