1:20pm | The monthly container cargo count at the Port of Long Beach rose 24.6% in November compared with the same period a year ago, the port reported on Monday.
The Port moved 558,307 twenty-foot equivalent container units in November. That’s up from to 448,151 TEUs in November 2009, the port said.
Imports were up more than 20%, and exports were up 24.8%, while empty container moves were up 33.8%–empty containers are mostly bound overseas for refilling.
In October, the Port of Long Beach announced a 30% increase of total cargo containers traded through the harbor in September, compared to September of 2009. That increase marked the tenth consecutive month of cargo growth, and trade at the Port of Long Beach is now at its highest level since the beginning of the recession in 2008.
Southern California’s twin ports—Long Beach and Los Angeles—are on track to post total exports for the year that approach the records set before the global recession, according to a recent story in the Los Angeles Times.
