10:00am | The Long Beach Sailing Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed in 1991, is reaching out to the community to generate excitement for the Congressional Cup regatta in March.

The popular race and events surrounding it take place in San Pedro Bay and in and around Long Beach.

The Long Beach Sailing Foundation sponsors activities to promote national and international amateur sailing, as well as enhancing maritime education, and creating sailing opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. The foundation also participates in outreach programs to involve the Boys and Girls Club and to include at-risk youths.

The foundation maintains a fleet of Catalina-37 sailboats used for training, racing and team building events. Second, the foundation also provides sailing equipment and facilities and encourages participation in local, national and international nautical activities.

The foundation partners with the U.S. Sailing Center, Bahia Marine and Hardware, Marina Shipyard and Samson Rope and Bruce Brown.

The Catalina-37 fleet have been used in the annual Congressional Cup for more than a decade. During the 2011 Congressional Cup week the Catalina-37s will be manned by some of the best sailors and skippers in the world, according to a statement issued by the foundation.

The Long Beach Sailing Foundation is supporting the Congressional Cup along with the Long Beach Yacht Club.
