At the highly attended North American International Auto Show in Detroit today, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk announced that his company is very close to selecting a location to build their Model S electric sedan and is currently doing “final due diligence” in the selection process, according to this report from the Edmunds.com automotive blog. Of course, Tesla is reportedly choosing between the cities of Long Beach and Downey for their production site.
Musk also forecast that the Model S would be built and ready for sale in about 2.5 years, which would peg showroom dates around late summer of 2012.
As we’ve mentioned here, here and here, to produce an entirely new chassis and platform with limited funds obtained through low-interest federal energy loans using groundbreaking new technology without a current place to locate production much less produce the site that will produce the car and have it ready for sale in under three years would be…
…well, it would be a monumental feat. Good luck, Tesla.
