The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners voted this morning to award $383,200 in the form of 76 scholarships to local community organizations.
The money is meant to educate residents about the Port of Long Beach’s mission, according to a release issued by the port this morning.
“The Port is part of the community and we are investing in local organizations that represent the diversity of Long Beach,” said Harbor Commission President Lori Ann Guzmán in a statement. “These are the kinds of activities and events that bring a community together, and we want to show how the Port is a vital part of the city.”
According to the release, the groups receiving the award represent a “wide cross section of the city” and support causes ranging from helping needy children to celebrating Long Beach’s diversity.
The awards came from 112 submissions entered in September through October 2, one of two application periods offered throughout the year. In this batch of applicants, 16 groups applied for the first time, counting the more sponsorship requests for the port than any previous fiscal year. The full list of awardees is available here.
The next application period will be March 2016.
