The Port of Long Beach (POLB) announced Wednesday that it will soon begin accepting applications for its community sponsorship program.
Socially responsible local groups can apply for funds to organize community events and activities that help to inform residents about the POLB while making the city a better place to live and work, according to the release.
Last October, $378,200 was awarded by the Harbor Commissioners as 76 scholarships to local organizations. The local groups receiving the funds represented a diverse cross section of the city and supported arts, environment, social justice and historic preservation initiatives.
Sponsorship funding requests can be submitted starting Tuesday, March 1 through Friday, April 1 with the next and last call for applications in September.
Applicants are advised to plan ahead for their events — after the application period closes, it will take about 45 days before recommendations will be sent to the Board of Harbor Commissioners for a decision. It is expected funding will be awarded in mid-May. There is no restriction on organizations that have received past awards. Applicants are judged on how they can help the Port inform the community of the many ways the Port of Long Beach is an integral part of the community fabric.
