According to Port of Long Beach records, cargo volume in the port rose by 14.7% in September compared to the same month last year, outshining the Port of Los Angeles, whose volume fell 5% though garnered a larger amount of containers moved.
Long Beach’s port moved some 587,114 TEUs through its facility this September, with imports accounting for 307,981 TEUs and exports accounting for 134,676 TEUs. “Empties”—empty import TEUs sent back out—were up 9.4% and accounted for the other 144,457 TEUs passing through the port.
Los Angeles, meanwhile, saw a total of 710,892 TEUs pass through, with imports representing 370,785 TEUs and exports sending out 150,380; empties, rising 1.33%, accounted for the remainder.
This marks the Port’s second busiest month of 2013 behind August, not surprising given that August through October typically mark peak seasons for ports across the nation as commercial retailers send product to prepare for the holiday shopping season.
