The Port of Long Beach (POLB) announced that two cargo terminals—Total Terminals International and Crescent Terminals—have temporarily suspended vessel operations due to the storm surge.
According to Art Wong of POLB, 10- to 15-foot waves near Pier T and Pier F would have put longshoremen in danger were they to continue working in such conditions.
Total Terminals International on Pier T has two Mediterranean Shipping Co. container ships at berth while Crescent Terminals on Pier F has two break-bulk ships at berth. Crescent reported flooding earlier today.
Surges were so powerful last night that rock from the Navy Mole breakwater were put onto the nearby roadway following reports of road damage [pictured left] on Nimitz Rd. Additionally, two barges broke from their anchors, prompting POLB to later tow and dock the barges at berths T136 and T134.
According to Wong, no injuries have been reported. The two cargo terminals will remain closed until further notice.
