The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners appointed industry veterans Michael Christensen and Glenn Farren to newly-created management positions this week. The two additions to the Port of Long Beach (POLB) team were created to improve cargo flow and service and to improve the supply chain overall.
Christensen, who was Deputy Director at the Port of Los Angeles (POLA), was appointed as POLB’s Senior Executive for Supply Chain Optimization and will report directly to Chief Executive Jon Slangerup. Farren, who was General Manager for Hapag-Lloyd America, was appointed to Long Beach’s Director of Tenant Services and Operations, a position created to relay the importance of relations with Port tenants. He will report to Dr. Noel hacegaba, managing Director of Commercial Operations/Chief Commercial Officer of the POLB.
Christensen, who has over 40 years of experience in both goods movement, operations and governmental affairs, will be working with industry stakeholders to improve communication and cooperation among links of the supply chain. He was ranked as the number two executive at the POLA since 2006, served as Vice President for the Parsons Transportation Group in Irvine, and is also a registered professional engineer in 10 states. He earned his bachelor’s degree in civil enginieering at Arizona State University and a certificate in Executive Education from harvard Kennediy School of Government. Christensen will start Monday, March 2.
Farren has over 20 years of experience managing marine terminals. He served as General Manager for Southern California Operations at Hapag-Lloyd and has worked for shipping companies Maersk, Sea-Land and APL. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Baylor University in Texas in business administration. Farren will also start in March.
“I am extremely pleased to have Michael Christensen and Glenn Farren joining our Long Beach executive team. Both Mike and Glenn bring extensive port operations and supply chain expertise to their respective assignments, along with a wealth of industry knowledge and key contacts,” said Jon Slangerup, Port Chief Executive, in a press statement. “Mike and Glenn will play instrumental roles in building the relationships, systems and processes needed to deliver world-class operating performance as measured in the velocity, efficiency and reliability of import and export goods that move through the Port of Long Beach.”
