Argentinian steaks and a dog agility course could be headed to the last two non-contracted beach concessions stands in Long Beach if the City Council approves proposed contracts with Gaucho Grill and Monty’s Beach at its next meeting on Tuesday.

The Alamitos Beach and Granada Beach stands were not part of the last round of contracts approved by the council in June but they could have new vendors soon.

Monty’s, which will offer coffee, natural juices, breakfast and lunch sandwiches and burgers, is proposed for the vacant Granada concession stand. The newly renovated stand is just north of Rosie’s Dog Beach and Monty’s has informed the city that it will pursue California Coastal Commission approval to install a dog agility course, according to a city memo.

The larger Alamitos Beach concession stand is still under construction but the two-story structure could be the future home of Gaucho Grill. That restaurant, which operates in Downey, West Covina and Buena Park, is an Argentinian steakhouse but will operate three versions of its business at Alamitos Beach.

According to a city report, Gaucho Beach will offer steaks, short ribs, empanadas as well as vegan options while Gaucho Cafe will offer coffee, juices, baked goods and ice cream. Gaucho Mercado will provide “grab & go” options like sandwiches and salads.

The contract with Gaucho Grill is for five years but the city won’t start collecting rent until a month after it’s occupied by Gaucho Grill or June 2022.

The building is still under construction and the city is responsible for building out the shell of the structure while Gaucho Grill would be responsible for interior elements like the kitchen, food prep areas and furniture.

The contract with Monty’s is also for five years but because the Granada Beach stand is already complete and is expected to be handed over in “as is” condition, that stand could open much sooner than the Alamitos Beach location.

There is also an out in the contact for Monty’s. If the Coastal Commission declines its application to expand its footprint to include sunbeds, cabanas and the dog agility course, Monty’s can terminate its agreement with the city.

The City Council is expected to approve the contracts at its Aug. 17 regular meeting.
