The California State University (CSU) system has selected Pearson eCollege, based in London, as the partner to head CSU’s Cal State Online initiative.
Beginning in 2010, the CSU began investigations into whether online learning could be brought into the CSU system via systemic avenues, catering to the system’s mission in expanding California’s workforce by providing more accessible education.
Over the past three decades, California has fallen from first to twelfth nationally in number of citizens over 25 earning bachelors degrees, prompting the CSU to reevaluate the way in which it approaches traditional higher education.
That analysis led to the eventual creation of Cal State Online, which boasts full online program offerings from the 23 campuses that compose the CSU. Cal State Online, according to the CSU, uses a cloud-based learning management system and data analytics to monitor student performance and learning outcomes.
“Pearson eCollege’s expertise and demonstrated success in online education and experience with large state universities make them an excellent fit for Cal State Online,” said John Welty, president of Fresno State and the chair of the Cal State Online Board. “Their compelling case studies highlight their ability to provide a robust learning experience and support for the students that will participate in Cal State Online.”
Cal State Online is currently working with campuses on pilot programs scheduled for launch in spring 2013.
