A van caught fire in Long Beach’s Washington neighborhood Friday afternoon, but authorities do not believe it’s connected to a recent string of car fires that appear to have been deliberately set by an unknown perpetrator.

Friday’s vehicle fire was reported around 1 p.m. on Long Beach Boulevard and 16th Street in front of Eddie’s Jr. Market, according to the Long Beach Fire Department.

LBFD spokesperson Capt. Jack Crabtree said there was nothing suspicious about the incident, and fire investigators were not called to the scene.

It’s unclear whether anyone was driving the van when the fire started but no injuries were reported, Crabtree said.

The fire does not appear to be related in any way to the arsons LBFD has been investigating in Downtown Long Beach over the last two weeks, Crabtree said.

In those cases, five cars have been intentionally set on fire while parked inside parking structures, with the first case happening on Aug. 20, according to the LBFD.

This week, authorities arrested the wrong person on suspicion of participating in the crimes but released him soon after. The investigation is ongoing.
