One night, I was flipping the channels and I found myself watching El Show de Christina.  Christina Saralegui was interviewing a few cast members from the film, Under the Same Moon (trailer and official site).  The interview included Kate d Del Castillo, Adrian Alonso, Eugenio Derbez, and Carmen Salinas.  All which are extremely well known actors and actresses in Mexico and in my opinion are extremely talented individuals.  During the interview, Christina showed a part of the film that captivated me instantly.  All it took was a short one minute preview, the film is breathtaking.  I read somewhere that this film was, “A beautifully told story about the power of family and courage.”   I couldn’t agree more!

I’m so proud of Ligiah Villalobos, a Latina screenwriter that was able to tell this story so well that it has captivated people around the world.  Her film was the most expensive film in a foreign Language at the Sundance Festival, it swept the honors at the 23rd Annual Imagen Awards taking home the Best Film, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor and Director Awards on August 21st.  In addition, Under the Same Moon won the 2008 Special Achievement ALMA Award for outstanding Spanish Language Motion Picture and the 2008 Youth Artist Award for Best Performance in an International Feature Film.

Bring family & friends to the showing of this outstanding film about an immigrant Mexican mother and her son.  It is also a great opportunity to delight your palate with the cuisine of Viva Café that prepared a special Mexican menu for the occasion.  This will be a magnificent night filled with entertainment and pride!

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH FAQ:
•    How did this period become “Hispanic Heritage Month?”
Well, the 100th United States Congress declared this period as a time for “the people of the United States, especially the educational community, to observe such month with appropriate ceremonies and activities.”

•    Why this period of September 15-October 15?
In case you didn’t know, Hispanic Heritage Month began on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  Mexico declared its independence on September 16 and Chile on September 18.  Also, October 12 is Dia de la Raza, to some known as Columbus Day.
