Throughout April, the Long Beach Public Library will join libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebration of National Library Month.

“Libraries in today’s community are more than just a place of quiet study,” stated Mayor Robert Garcia. “They are also creative and engaging community centers where people can collaborate using new technologies, access education and career support, read the latest from a favorite author, or just relax.”

The Long Beach Public Library will be hosting events for the community at all 12 locations. Activities will include crafting sessions, book discussions, science and naturalist programs, pop-up libraries and more, according to the announcement released Friday.

“The library has always been a place of transformation,” said Glenda Williams, director of Library Services, in a statement. “Whatever your interest or need, the library and our library staff are here to provide you the resources required to accomplish your goals and achieve your dreams.”

Sponsored by the American Library Association since 1958, National Library Month is a month-long moment dedicated to celebrating the noble contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians, and a way to promote library use.

“Service to the community has always been the focus of the library,” stated American Library Association’s Honorary Chair, Gene Luen Yang. “Libraries level the playing field for people of any age who are seeking the information and access to technologies that will improve their quality of life.”

In case you haven’t heard, as part of the LBPL’s April celebration, the library system will forgive fines for overdue materials. Patrons with overdue materials in their possession can return their items and their fee(s) will be forgiven. Patrons with unpaid overdue fines from already-returned materials can donate a new book and have their fines waived, as well.
