As far as community organizations go, it just doesn’t get any better than the North Long Beach Community Action Group.

That’s a claim that the group can make comfortably after capturing the “Neighborhood of the Year Award” on May 23, and they’ll be rewarded for their efforts tonight with a potluck dinner honoring the achievement.  All residents are welcome to attend.

The potluck dinner will be held tonight at 6:00 pm, at the Neighborhood Resource Center, 425 Atlantic Ave.  Two other celebrations are planned for the future – one on June 26 and the other on July 13.

The NLB CAG, which was founded in the early 90’s by residents concerned about rising civil unrest, also brought home first prize in the “Social Revitalization” category.  The national awards are held by Neighborhoods, USA, and “Neighborhood of the Year” is its highest honor.  The organization received the award largely based on its work conducting a project which documented the history of North Long Beach, from its 1924 inception to the present.  The project will be presented tonight.

“I really appreciate the attention that these awards have brought to North Long Beach and our neighborhood group,” said NLB CAG President Laurie C. Angel in a released statement.

“We are not always the beneficiary of positive media reports, which is one of the reasons that we did this project. It’s important to improve the image of North Long Beach, and to make sure that we are included in the history of the City.”
