10:19am | Centro C.H.A. Inc. (Community Hispanic Association) will be honoring 10 individuals “who exemplify excellence and contribute to the great city of Long Beach” at the 2011 Nuestra Imagen 15th Annual Leadership Awards on Thursday, October 13, 2011.

Those being recognized are:

Dora Jacildo, Executive Director of Children Today, who will be receiving Excellence In Promoting Community Culture Nuestra Imagen Award. According to Centro C.H.A., this award “honors the achievements of a business, organization, or an individual(s) that demonstrates the value and presence of the arts and culture in community life.”

Father Gregory J. Boyle, Founder and Executive Director of Homeboy Industries, will be receiving the Humanitarian Award, which “honors an individual whose life and humanitarian service clearly exemplifies: a true spirit of love and helpfulness to others, dedicated service to the community, and inspires members of the community to live a productive life.”

Richard D. Steinke, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach, will be given the Corporate Excellence Award, which “honors and recognizes community members that have gone the extra mile to promote Corporate Citizenship and know the importance of investing in the communities they serve.”

Jane Netherton, President & CEO of International City Bank, has earned the Outstanding Youth Service Provider Excellence Award, which “honors an individual or organization for outstanding services to diverse youth and families; promoting education, employment, human services, public safety, recreation, culture, and youth development.”

Jim McDonnell, Chief of Police of the Long Beach Police Department, will be receiving the Excellence in Public Safety Award, which  “honors the achievements of an individual, agency or department who have served to protect the lives and property of the citizens of Long Beach and improved the quality of life by building a strong and safe community.”

Theresa J. Marino, Public Bureau Manager of the Long Beach Department of Health & Human Services, will be given the Healthy Communities Public Health Excellence Award, which “honors a business, organization, or an individual(s) that provides access to affordable, quality health care for underserved low-income children and families in the City of Long Beach and promotes fundamental improvements in the health status for all residents at the local, statewide and national levels.”

Matt Saldana Principal of the Long Beach School for Adults, will be given the Excellence In Higher Education Service Award, which “honors a person dedicated to Higher Education and committed to empowering others by fostering the development of student and community learning through teaching andmentoring towards personal self-achievement.”

Jenny Oropeza will be honored post-humorously with the establishment of the “Create Change” Jenny Oropeza Community Service Excellence Award, to “honor and to carry forward the legacy of the late Jenny Oropeza.”

Moises Galaviz and Jasmin Bejar, two participants in the LIFT program, will be relieving the Paul Griego Jr. & Javier Gutierrez Youth Award, which “honors youth committed to enhancing their education and career through community service, leadership, peer-mentorship, and serving as an inspiration to youth and young adults, promoting peace and cultural diversity.”
