10:35am | Centro Shalom will honor Assemblymember Gil Cedillo, author of the California DREAM Act, at its annual Dinner Gala on November 5 at 6:00 pm at the Petroleum Club in Long Beach.
On Saturday, October 8, 2011 the California DREAM Act was signed by Governor Jerry Brown who stated, “Going to college is a dream that promises intellectual excitement and creative thinking. The Dream Act benefits us all by giving top students a chance to improve their lives and the lives of all of us.”
The California DREAM Act, first introduced by Assemblymember Cedillo in 2006, was re-introduced as two bills in January of this year. The first bill AB 130 allows students that meet the in-state tuition requirements to apply for and receive scholarships derived from non-state funds. AB 131 allows students that meet the in-state tuition requirements to apply and receive financial aid at California public colleges and universities.
Centro Shalom Honors Assemblymember Gil Cedillo Marc Coleman, President of Centro Shalom Board of Directors stated, “We are honored to recognize Assemblymember Cedillo for his tireless dedication and work over these many years to better the lives of immigrant children by providing them a doorway to equal educational opportunities to become educated and productive citizens. The California DREAM Act opens these doors.”
Featured entertainment will be provided by Mariachi Los Solecitos, a student group of Jose Hernandez’s Mariachi Sol de Mexico and Centro Shalom’s Grupo Yamin.
