A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was injured today when his vehicle collided with a car during the pursuit of a suspect who was eventually apprehended.

At about 1:30PM, police say the CHP officer began pursuing a suspect who exited the 405 Freeway and ended up driving the wrong way on Wardlow Road near Pine Ave. The suspect hit one car and kept going, when the CHP officer, who was close behind, was also hit by a different car. The suspect pulled over his car and fled the scene on foot.

A perimeter was erected by the CHP and the Long Beach Police Department and the suspect was arrested at around 4:30PM. The driver of the vehicle that struck the officer stayed on the scene and was cooperating with authorities.

The officer was taken to a hospital, and while his exact condition is not known, CHP Officer Christian Cracraft said that “he was alert and conscious.” LBPD spokesman Nancy Pratt said that CHP will be taking the lead on the investigation.
