A man who fatally shot his estranged wife on Christmas Day 2017 and then turned the gun on himself in Bellflower was sentenced today to 40 years to life in state prison.

Santiago Palacios Salgado, 58, pleaded no contest Aug. 29 to second-degree murder for the slaying of Gabriela Garcia, 41.

On Dec. 25, 2017, Salgado went to a home in the 9100 block of Rosecrans Avenue shortly after 3 p.m. and gunned down his estranged wife, then shot himself in the upper body.

Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene. Salgado was taken to a hospital and later arrested.

According to the sheriff’s department, the couple had a son and daughter—aged 6 and 8 at the time—who were at the shooting scene but were not injured.
