Newly-elected First District Councilmember Robert Garcia was sworn into his seat in a brief ceremony before last night’s meeting, and the Council shortly thereafter wasted no time getting down to business. Most notably, voting to approve mandatory unpaid furloughs for City employees and voting to decline the release of City e-mails relating to the proposed swap of wetlands with developer Tom Dean. The former passed 7-2, while the latter was denied 6-3.
The furloughs move will force most employees of the cash-strapped City to take one week per year of unpaid vacation, exempting the Police and Fire departments.
