10:00am | Long Beach resident Stella Ursua has announced her intention to run for the City Council’s 2nd District seat. The 2nd District is currently represented by Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal who is running for reelection.

Stella is the president of the North American School of Green Technology and the nonprofit Alliance for Sustainable Action Partnerships (ASAP). Her campaign is tied with her work with the two previously mentioned organizations: it is, according to her campaign, imperative that Long Beach focus on creating healthier, safer, and environmentally sustainable neighborhoods. After working for many years in leadership and job development professions, Stella has been focused on creating and growing “green” industries in Long Beach, which will help create jobs and provide economic and environmental sustainability to the city.

“I believe in a green economy,” Ursua stated. “Careers in water technology and infrastructure, green building construction, solar technology, and energy efficiency are just some of the industries will help us regrow our city and economy, and put residents back to work.”

Ursua has been in active in the pursuit of building a greener economy, with memberships in the California Green Workforce Coalition, US Green Building Council, Repower LA!, Rebuild the US and Green Long Beach!; in addition, she recently launched the Southern CA Green Economic Council. Stella worked for the United States Veterans Initiative and was their first Green Jobs Coordinator, responsible for assisting returning veterans connect to green jobs training programs and job placement opportunities. Stella is currently conducting green awareness workshops for schools, non-profits, neighborhood associations, government agencies, and youth organizations, all in an effort to create more awareness and more advocates for green industries and careers. 

Ursua lives with her spouse and business partner, Marcia Tolentino, in downtown Long Beach.
