The latest episode in the “Diverting The L.A. River” soap opera reveals that city officials are very interested in changing the flow of the L.A. River into the Port of Long Beach, rather than into Queensway Bay (dumping hundreds of tons of trash onto local beaches).

With Mayor Foster, Senator Lowenthal and other councilmembers now expressing support for the idea – or at least an exploration into the idea – cleaner beaches are beginning to look more and more realistic.

The Press-Telegram, always one to offer another side, reports that while diverting the flow of the river may appear to provide a positive change for the city’s appearance… well, it definitely would.  But it would also be a “lengthy and costly” process.

Makes sense, seeing as how it probably would be difficult to divert a river.  But if Long Beach is going to spend money anywhere, wouldn’t taking steps to permanently clean its beaches be a good place to start?
