I don’t want to say that City Council meetings are dull…(How dull are they?)…well, the meetings are so dull that…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Okay, so Letterman is not going to be asking me to write material for him anytime soon, which given the recent Letterman-Palin non-controversy controversy is probably a good thing.
But, City Council meetings are pretty dry stuff.
Take for example this week’s meeting, which – with no major items on it – lasted all of one hour and 19 minutes. This rates it as the shortest meeting this year for the Council and only the second this year to last less than two hours. It almost makes you think that maybe The Madison or L’Opera were having “Council member Tuesday–50 percent off for all Council members before 7 p.m.”
Well, since I have nothing to really add to what happened–unless you would like to read 1,000 words on extending construction notification to residents–I thought I might try to amuse you with the rest of CityBeat written in the form of a Dr. Seuss poem. My sincere apologies to Mr. Geisel.
The City Council did meet, yes, on Tuesday it met,
In their chambers on Ocean, it’s a schedule that’s set.
So at five in the PM, or the schedule does say,
They were all called to order, with a moment’s delay.
Now the nine we call members, they’re a sight to behold,
There’s young ones, and middle ones, and some we call old.
There’s Suja, a Gabelich, Garcia, a Schipske.
There are Lerchers, and DeLongs, O’Donnells and the Dee.
But this Tuesday they were eight, which is nine minus one,
And the one was named Tonia, was off having fun.
So the Mayor we call Bob, with a tip of his hat,
Kicked off the full proceedings by presenting a cat.
After the cat tipped its hat, as some cats often do,
The meeting then got started, as some meetings do too.
It began with the hearings, just three items to clear,
And the Council they heard, what there was they could hear.
The RDA was up first, with a small little plan,
To sell two houses on Daisy, each for 25 grand.
The buildings are historic, or so staff they do say,
With the goal to make them look, like they looked in the day.
Item three was on zoning, as in lines on a map,
And the Council heard plenty, as the issue unwrapped.
It was all about people, and the place where they live,
When construction is started, what notice to give.
The idea was to increase, the distance from a site,
That a notice be given, as a resident’s right.
The council said a thousand, as in feet from your home,
Resident or occupant, a notice will be shown.
Now with the hearings all done, the public chimed in,
But just two speakers got up, to speak in the end.
Listed under consent, were ten items plus one,
And one minute later, all the items were done.
Three small items did come next, on the list next to do,
And seven minutes later, those were all finished too.
So with a look at the clock, as the hands they did turn,
Told us an hour nineteen, and the Council’s adjourned.
