1:00pm | On Saturday, September 17th, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, the “We Can Soar” events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first transcontinental flight will begin with a celebration and overview of the historic flight from Sheepshead Bay, New York to Long Beach, California. Cal Rodgers began his coast-to-coast flight on September 17, 1911 and landed in Long Beach on December 10, 1911.

The event will be held at Boeing Theater, 4000 N. Lakewood Boulevard, Building 800 and will feature a presentation, reception, and book signing with featured speaker Dr. Richard Epstein. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students.

Featured speaker Dr. Richard Epstein’s educational background is grounded in the fields of mathematics and physics. He spent 18 years in space communications as an electronics and communications engineer for various U.S. space and missile programs. Under the pseudonym E.P. Stein, he authored popular works of fiction, historic and non-fiction, as well as writing for TV and movies. His articles have appeared in Elle, People and Saturday Review. For the 75th Anniversary, Dr. Epstein published his book Flight of the Vin Fiz, which chronicles Calbraith Perry Rodgers’ challenge to “wing his way” across the United States in 30 days or less to receive $50,000 from Wiliam Randolph Hearst.
