With temperatures expected to reach the high 90s this weekend, city health officials will open five air-conditioned cooling centers throughout the city.

The centers will be in park community centers on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., when temperatures are expected to be 98 and 99 degrees. All will be operating with health order protocols in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and require health screenings, temperature checks, physical distancing and face coverings, officials said. The centers can serve a total of up to 250 people per day.

  • Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave.)
  • Long Beach Senior Center (1150 E. Fourth St.)

Officials remind residents to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks while outdoors, wear loose-fitting, light clothes and a hat outside, apply sunscreen, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, not to leave children or pets in a parked car and to check on elderly and home-bound people.
