No one except a dog was home when a small house fire erupted in the family room and kitchen of a house near Pacific Avenue and West 36th Street early this morning.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire shortly after 5:40 Saturday morning, but discovered a dead dog inside, Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jake Heflin said.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. There is extensive fire damage to the family room and kitchen and heavy smoke damage to the rest of the house, Heflin said.
