7:45am | The public is invited to a grand opening ceremony for the Admiral Kidd Park expansion project this weekend.
Seventh District Long Beach Councilman James Johnson, members of the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency and the departments of Development Services, Public Works and Parks, Recreation and Marine are expected to attend.
“This new expansion is much needed in a neighborhood that has lacked sufficient parks and open space,” said Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster. “I’m delighted to see the transformation of the property from a location filled with blight and crime to a place where residents can enjoy a great park in their own neighborhood.”
The new 3.6-acre park space includes a playground, outdoor fitness stations, lighted soccer fields, picnic areas and parking.
The park is situated on the former site of an industrial complex that was a public safety nuisance until it was purchased and demolished by the RDA in July 2006. According to the Long Beach Police Department, between 2004-2006 the area was the location of more than 435 incidents of crime, including violent crimes, narcotics violations, and property crimes.
“The remodel and expansion of Admiral Kidd Park will make a difference in the quality of life for West Long Beach,” Johnson said. “Open space is desperately needed in the western parts of our city in order for children and families to have safe and healthy places to gather and play.”
The event is slated for on Saturday, March 26, at 11 am. The park expansion area is located on Santa Fe Avenue between 21st and West Willard streets. The day’s festivities will also include entertainment and refreshments.
